Introducing Phill Bates, our new UAV/UAS Category Manager

We are delighted to welcome Phill Bates to Syndico as our new Category Manager for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)!

Phill joins Syndico with a wealth of experience having started his career with the Army and followed by many years working in technology distribution roles (including looking after Northern Europe licence-free sales for Motorola).

As our new Category Manager for UAS, Phill’s role is to provide resellers with all the tools they need to transition into and establish themselves within the drone market. Here’s what Phill shared when we caught up with him for a quick Q&A.

So Phill, welcome to Syndico! What  have you been doing recently?

Since leaving the communication world I have been running a number of businesses including packaging and LED lighting manufacturing, and have been a Strategy Consultant leading organisations through transformation.  Implementing and commercialising technology is key to growth and I’m excited to be able to help our partners on that journey.

Excellent! What exactly will you be doing in your new role at Syndico?

The drone market is going to expand aggressively in the coming years, and in the UK we are only scratching the surface when it comes to how drone technology is used. Therefore, my job is to provide the tools to enable our partners to lead their customers through the transition to using drone technology in line with the changes in technology and regulations around using drones. Many of our resellers who have traditionally only provided communication solutions to their customers are perfectly placed to establish themselves in the drone market, so I will be placing significant focus on helping them to onboard drones to their products and services offerings.

What is the most important thing that people should know about commercial drones?

The reason why drones are considered to have such huge growth potential is because of the improvements in efficiency and safety they can deliver for so many applications. Drone technology is developing rapidly – not just relating the drone hardware itself, but also the software applications used for post-processing. If we don’t lead our customers through that journey then someone else will as the opportunity is far too big to ignore, and Syndico is committed to doing just that.

What is your proudest professional achievement?

Supplying headsets to the London 2012 Olympics was the most complex and challenging project I have ever worked on, but it was extremely rewarding to help deliver a world class solution for such a high-profile event – arguably the biggest on the world stage.

What are your passions/hobbies outside of work?

I’m a passionate motorcyclist; an advanced instructor and examiner as well as a leading member of the National Escort Group delivering safe professional cycle races.  I also love watching rugby as my old broken body is too old to play now!  And I like a beer or two, as anyone who knows me will no doubt be able to confirm.

Syndico is an authorised DJI UK Distributor for Enterprise products. DJI Enterprise drones bring a new perspective to surveying, inspections and emergency service missions, and they help businesses to drive new levels of safety, efficiency and accuracy.

Commercial or Enterprise drones are more commonly being used by businesses in key sectors like construction, engineering, public safety, agriculture and many more. By using drone technology, businesses can gain an edge by allowing them to survey, inspect and analyse buildings, structures, environments and situations from an aerial perspective with ease.
